AI Eligibility Intelligence

An intelligent layer over the eligibility workflow

Eligibility is where a lot of laboratory revenue is quietly lost — not because nobody checked, but because checking is slow, the documents are inconsistent and the exceptions pile up. This is an assistance layer for the staff who do that work.

Capabilities

What the layer actually does

Reading, extracting, normalizing, checking and routing — so the people who work eligibility spend their time on the exceptions that need judgement.

  • Eligibility document interpretation

Insurance cards, coverage letters and requisition insurance sections read and structured.

  • Insurance information extraction

Payer, plan, member ID, group and subscriber relationship extracted with per-field confidence.

  • Payer identification

Payer names normalized from what the document actually said to the payer the system can transact with.

  • Coverage analysis

Eligibility responses interpreted into something a person can act on rather than a raw transaction dump.

  • Patient responsibility estimation

Estimated responsibility surfaced early, presented as an estimate and clearly labelled as one.

  • Benefit interpretation

Benefit detail summarized against the tests being ordered.

  • Missing information detection

Absent member IDs, unreadable cards and incomplete subscriber details identified at intake.

  • Workflow recommendations

Suggested next actions for staff — advisory only, and always reviewable.

  • Exception routing

Unresolved coverage routed to the right queue with the specific reason attached.

  • Eligibility work queues

Exceptions grouped and prioritized so the highest-value unresolved coverage is worked first.

  • Confidence-gated review

Low-confidence interpretations are held for a person before they influence anything downstream.

What this layer does not do

Worth stating plainly, because eligibility is exactly the area where overclaiming causes real harm.

  • It does not make coverage determinations. Payers do that.
  • It does not decide medical necessity.
  • It does not guarantee payment, and an estimate is presented as an estimate.
  • It does not replace the staff who work eligibility — it prepares their work and routes their exceptions.
  • Recommendations are advisory and subject to human review before they affect billing.
Questions

Eligibility questions

Is the coverage decision made by AI?

No. Coverage is determined by the payer. This layer interprets documents and eligibility responses, extracts and normalizes information, flags what is missing, and routes exceptions to staff. The determination is not ours to make and we do not present it as if it were.

How accurate is the patient responsibility estimate?

It is an estimate derived from the benefit information available at the time, and it is labelled as such wherever it appears. Final responsibility is determined at adjudication.

What happens when the payer cannot be identified?

The order moves to an eligibility exception queue with the reason attached and the source document available, so staff can resolve it rather than discovering the problem when the claim is denied.
